MATERIAL NOTES / Paper
Reading an image without words
Lines, spaces and colour planes can suggest a sequence, almost like a sentence. Try reading an image from an unfamiliar direction.
NARRA Editorial · An interpretive reading of illustrations
01 / LOOKING NOTES
Choose a starting point
A graphic work may first draw attention to its darkest colour or largest shape. Deliberately begin with a small part at the edge instead. Where does it take you? Changing a starting point lets the same composition tell another story without adding anything to it.
02 / LOOKING NOTES
A blank area can be an interval
Look between the lines and planes. Which areas feel like pauses, and which seem to wait for a connection? In a detail view, a small gap from the full composition may become the main space through which you read the work.
03 / LOOKING NOTES
Move from one composition to a sequence
Paper works in this collection use titles recalling ripples, maps, signs and calendars. Choose two whose titles differ but whose forms respond to each other. In a personal trail, you decide whether they should be read as continuity or contrast.
