MATERIAL NOTES / Metal

Folds, edges and a moment of pause

Rather than beginning with an idea of hardness, look at the two sides suggested by a fold. An inside and an outside may tell different stories.

NARRA Editorial · An interpretive reading of illustrations

An original digital illustration of folded pause, with metal inspired surfaces, clearly defined forms and a warm neutral ground. This is a fictional visual study, not a photograph of a physical artefact.

01 / LOOKING NOTES

Read a fold as a change of direction

An angled line asks the eye to change direction. Follow it from one end to the other, then reverse your reading. What seemed like an entrance may become an exit. A second look does not have to begin in the same place.

02 / LOOKING NOTES

The space of a tray and the space around it

For a form that recalls a tray, distinguish a place for holding things from the empty space around it. Both are present in the image, but they may play different roles in your reading. Does the title help, or limit, that reading?

03 / LOOKING NOTES

Pair it with an unexpected material

Place a metal study and a textile work in the same trail, choosing by the resemblance of their lines rather than their labels. They may share a rhythm while suggesting very different kinds of touch. Return to the material labels after comparing the images.
